A childhood of emotional, physical and sexual abuse
Kimberly Renee Poole (Summey) was born on November 8, 1976, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
As a child she grew up in a toxic home environment of severe emotional abuse. She would be raised under and often be witness to the dysfunction of her parent’s marriage. At 12 she started to be constantly raped and sexually abused by the adult son of a worker at her father’s custom car shop which was also located on the property. She would drop out of High School to work full time so that she could move out and leave the abuse at home. Once out she successfully completed and received her GED.
A youthful marriage
Kimberly Renee Poole was married at 18. She had just turned 19 when she had daughter Katie.
A few weeks later her husband Brent suggested and encouraged her to begin working part time as an exotic dancer. As with all marriages they struggled with problems, theirs exacerbated by youth. And as with nearly half of all marriages, both had affairs. The three men she had affairs with, none were customers while dancing, were either sexual predators trying to exploit her vulnerability from her abusive childhood, or trying to take advantage of any marriage problems at home. One of them is even a registered sex offender today. Now recognizing the problems, both began reconciliation and real progress was being made in their marriage. Sadly a few weeks later Brent would be taken from her. At 21 her husband would be shot by an armed robber while they were on a family vacation (with Katie) in Myrtle Beach. While at her husband’s wake, the day before his funeral, she would be arrested in false connection with his death. Held for almost a year and a half before trial, after just turning 23 she would be wrongfully convicted.
Since wrongful conviction
Since being wrongfully convicted Kimberly Renee Poole has been a creative, respected and hard working inmate.
Currently Kimberly has a healthy and loving relationship with her daughter Katie, and works full time at the facility transcribing textbooks to braille for blind children. Her co-workers and supervisors hold her in high regard. To this day she maintains her innocence with any involvement in Brent’s death, and still doesn’t know who robbed them and shot Brent.
